The furniture industry is dominated by big brand names like La Z Boy, Ashley, and Ethan Allen. With big names such as these, it is hard for a lesser-known furniture company to keep afloat. But, contrary to popular belief, brand isn’t everything and a small manufacturer can produce quality furniture at an extremely competitive price. Best Home Furnishings is one of these small companies that clawed their way up and is giving the big dogs a run for their money.

Ernest Prechtel and Clem Lange founded best Chairs in 1962 in Indiana. The founders started out by repairing old furniture and reupholstering truck seats. By March of the following year, they were able to add three other workers to their payroll. And just five years after that in 1968 Best Chairs employed 17 people and produced 60-120 chairs per day in 325 different fabrics.

In 1988, Clem Lange bought out his co-founder, Ernest Prechtel, and Best Chairs has been owned by the Lange family ever since. Best Chairs continued to grow decade after decade and in 2004 Best Chairs announced that they would now be called Best Home Furnishings after adding stationary sofas and tables to their product line. Best Home Furnishings now employs over a thousand people and has multiple plants in Indiana.

Color Selection

One of the most frustrating parts of furniture shopping is selecting a color. That may be the only thing stopping you from purchasing another sofa. Sofas come in so many different colors it can be very difficult to choose one that will look good with what you already have in your home. Whether you’re starting from scratch or trying to match your favorite drapes, this article should help you decide what colors compliment each other the best.

The best way to gauge how colors look together is by using a color wheel. A color wheel is just a basic tool for combining colors. The first color wheel was designed by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666 and has been used ever since to help people in selecting compatible colors.

The color wheel is made up of 12 colors. Red, blue, and yellow are known as the primary colors because they are the three main colors from which every other color is derived. When you mix two primary colors together, you get what is known as a secondary color. These colors include purple, green, and orange. And lastly, when you mix a primary color with a secondary color you get a tertiary color. The tertiary colors make up the last 6 colors of the color wheel.

Colors are also categorized into warm and cool colors. Colors on the one half of the wheel are warm colors. These colors include the reds, oranges, and yellows. These colors are very vivid and energetic. The colors on the other half of the wheel are considered the cool colors. These colors include the blues, purples, and greens. These colors tend to be very calm and soothing. If you have a busy space with lots of energy, such as a kitchen or a family room, you may want to include the warm colors. If you were thinking about changing up your bedroom or a study, you would be best to stick with the cool colors.

You may ask yourself why there is only 12 colors on the wheel. There are thousands of colors out in the world and trying to put them in one wheel would be cramped and confusing. Adding black, white, or gray to the color makes all the other colors of the world. If you add white to any color it is considered a tint of that color. Adding black to the color makes a shade of the color. And if you would add gray to a color it is considered a tone.

There are a few different ways to combine colors using the wheel. The first is called Complementary colors.

Complementary colors are just a more complex way of saying opposite colors. So any colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel are considered complementary colors. In the example the complementary colors are red and green. Complementary colors are very vibrant and need to be managed carefully so they don’t appear overwhelming.

Another way to combine colors is to use the Analogous method.

Analogous colors are colors that appear right next to each other on the color wheel. These colors match well and provide a serene, comfortable feeling. They are usually done in groups of three. You can pick one color to be your dominant color then select your second color to support the first. The third color is used as an accent color. So if your walls are a light blue color you can support it with a green chair and lighter green pillows and accents.

The third way of combining colors is called Triadic.

The Triadic colors are just like you would think they placed. They are evenly spaced around the wheel making a triangle between them. These colors tend to be very vibrant so your best bet would be to choose one dominant color and use the other two colors as accents. For example, if you wanted purple to be your dominant color, you could purchase a chair that has purple in the fabric and accent it with green and orange pictures, pillows, etc.

The Split-Complementary method is another way to select colors.

Split-Complementary are simply the colors that are next to the opposing complement color. This in turn makes a skinny triangle as shown in the example. This is a good choice if you are new to decorating because it is difficult to mess up. If you love the color green and you have a lot of green in your room you could use red-orange and red-purple to accent it.

Two other ways of combining colors is the Rectangle and Square color schemes. But these methods have four colors and the more colors your introduce into the space the more confusing it can get. When it comes to decorating the simpler the better.

Picking colors can be easy if you have the right tools. By using the color wheel, your own personal opinions, and the opinions of your salesperson you will be able to make an informed decision that will result in a beautiful space.

When one thinks of mattress brands, the Serta sheep always seem to come to mind. Serta is one of the most popular mattress brands in the U.S. but you have to ask yourself, are you paying through the nose for your mattress, or are you paying for sheep? To Buy Leather or not to Buy Leather? That is the Question.

Leather, or not leather? That is a common question when it comes to furniture shopping. You may have wondered this yourself. Choosing leather furniture is more a matter of taste than anything else. But there are pros and cons to leather that you may not have thought of.

Leather wears the longest out of all the furniture coverings. Leather wears five times longer than traditional upholstery. Not only does it last long time, but it also cleans up quite easily. Running a damp rag over most spills is usually all you need.

In our society, leather has a reputation of class and sophistication. Leather has a very distinguished, rich look that can dress up any space. Some people may buy leather just to tell others they have leather furniture. Leather, like diamonds or expensive cars, is engrained in our subconscious as luxurious and a sign of high status.

But there are some drawbacks to choosing a piece of furniture in leather. Leather can be quite expensive depending on the quality. Even though it will last a very long time, it may not be in your budge or you may simply just not want to spend that much money on a piece of furniture. Leather can also require some maintenance. If you purchase high quality leather, you want to get the most out of it you possibly can. Using leather conditioners and other products exclusively made for leather products would be a great idea to keep your leather looking brand new. But that also requires time and extra money.

Leather also has the so-called “hot/cold” factor. If your sofa or chair is going to be in direct sunlight, it can get very hot and burn your skin. If you keep your house cool, the leather will remain cool. If your skin comes into contact with the cold or hot leather you better be prepared or you could get a shock.

Again, leather is a matter of personal taste. You may purchase a leather piece of furniture and love it and never go back. Or you may decide that it’s not for you and stick with what you know. “The most highly recommended bed in America”. That’s what you keep hearing on the commercials. Tempur-Pedic has launched an aggressive ad campaign informing consumers of its quality. You may say you can’t believe everything you hear on television, especially commercials. And usually you would be correct. But Tempur-Pedic has the credentials and statistics to back up their claims.

Before we get to the awards and studies, you should get a little history of Tempur-Pedic. Tempur-Pedic isn’t really a memory foam like most people think. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made of a specialized Tempur material. Tempur material was first developed by NASA in the 1970s to help cushion and support the astronauts during liftoff. The material was temperature sensitive, evenly distributed body weight, and absorbed pressure. NASA released this new material to the public in the 1980s and two companies in Europe, one in Sweden and one in Denmark, took the material and perfected it to be used in mattresses. In 1992, a Lexington, Kentucky man, Bob Trussel, visited Denmark and seeing the potential that the Tempur material could have in America, joined forces with the Dan-Foam company and Tempur-Pedic was born and brought to the states. Shortly after, Tempur-Pedic released its famous wine glass commercial where a full glass of wine was placed on the mattress and a grown woman jumped up and down on the other end of the mattress and the wine did not spill. That commercial hasn’t aired in years but it was a huge success because everyone remembers that commercial and it is synonymous with Tempur-Pedic.

You may ask yourself, “What makes a Tempur-Pedic mattress different than any other mattress?” The Tempur material completely conforms to your body providing superior support you can’t get with any other mattress. By conforming to your body, you will get support where you need it no matter what position you like to sleep. The Tempur material also relieves pressure points, such as shoulders, hips, and heels, that can get very sore because they do not traditionally get the support they need. Tempur-Pedic beds help align the spine and keep it straight. So if you suffer from back pain when you wake up in the morning, a Tempur-Pedic bed would benefit you tremendously. Nine out of 10 people claimed they would buy a Tempur-Pedic again and it is said that, on average, a Tempur-Pedic owner will tell 14 people about their mattress. Tempur-Pedic is also widely acclaimed and praised as a quality product. The Space Foundation certified the Tempur material and it has received the “Ease-of-Use Commendation” by The Arthritis Foundation. Tempur-Pedic beds have also received the prestigious title of “Best Buy” by the Consumers Digest and the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Adjusting to a Tempur-Pedic bed from a regular inner spring mattress will take a while. It is said that it will take approximately one month or so before you get used to your new Tempur-Pedic bed and start feeling the benefits. Tempur-Pedic pricing is the same throughout the nation so that eliminates the need to go price shopping. England may not be as well known as La Z Boy, Flexsteel, or Ashley, but England has it’s own characteristics that make it stick out from the rest of the pack. England provides attractive, quality furniture at a surprisingly low price.

A father, son, and uncle founded England in 1964. In 1974, England broke the industry shipping mold by delivering their products after just two weeks instead of the standard 6-12 weeks. England continued to grow throughout the 1970s and by the 1980s its number of employees grew from three to 200 employees. England has a 10-year cushion core warranty so you won’t have to worry about your cushions disintegrating and being stuck with it. Here at Lansing Furniture, we don’t get a lot of warranty claims on England furniture, but on the occasions that we do we have no problems receiving replacement cushions from England as long as the piece was purchased within the 10 year timeframe.
