Mattresses 101

For many people, buying a new mattress is a frustrating experience. There are so many different options and styles that it can often become overwhelming. Purchasing the right mattress is very important and it is a long-term decision.

A lot of people look the buy the least expensive mattress possible. Why spend a lot of money on something that nobody is going to see? Guests may see your living room or your kitchen furniture but not typically your bedroom. And even though this theory makes sense to most it is not entirely true.

You spend more time on your mattress than on any other piece of furniture in your home. Studies show that people spend 1/3 of their entire life on their mattress. The average mattress lasts approximately five to seven years depending on use and the original state of the mattress. So it makes sense to spend a little more and purchase a quality mattress that is going to provide years of comfort rather than the cheapest available option that provides less comfort and will have to be replaced sooner than later.

There are a couple different types of mattresses. And just like our computers, cars, cell phones, and other commonly used products, mattresses continue to evolve and incorporate more technology for our comfort. The oldest and most common mattress is the innerspring mattress in which metal coils are used to support the body. Many innerspring coil mattresses now have higher coil counts which both increases the life of the mattress and the supports the sleeper. Many mattress manufacturers are now including layers of latex and/or memory foam in order to make innerspring coil mattresses more comfortable. They are also producing mattresses that have more coils or stronger coils in the center of the bed as opposed to the top or the bottom of the bed. This provides extra support along the back and hips, which are the heaviest parts of the human body. And some mattresses even have individually wrapped coils to help adjust to the body and reduce motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other.

Foam beds include latex and memory foam mattresses. Latex beds are made of rubber so they are very durable and can last up to 20 or 30 years if taken care of properly. Latex mattresses provide support by contouring to the body and supporting the spine. Many people with latex allergies are afraid to purchase a latex mattress. But their concerns can be put to rest because the latex used in the bed is washed thoroughly multiple times, greatly reducing the protein that causes the allergy. And with a quality mattress the skin should never come into contact with the latex in the first place.

Memory foam beds have gained popularity in the last few years. The most known brand of memory foam mattresses is Tempur-Pedic. Memory foam mattresses are very different from latex and innerspring coil mattresses. When you sleep in a memory foam bed, you literally sleep “in” the bed. You sink down into the foam and it completely contours to your body and provides excellent spine support. For some people this may be a problem because by sinking in the mattress the body heat is absorbed into the mattress and can get very warm. Memory foam mattresses are the most difficult to get used to because they’re so different than the others. It usually takes about three or four weeks to adjust from another mattress to a memory foam mattress.

A big advantage about foam beds is that they both cut motion transfer drastically. A healthy sleeper moves about 40 to 60 times a night, and purchasing a foam mattress can be a sleep saver eliminating the transfer of motion to the other side of the bed and disturbing your partner. Foam beds have gained popularity in the last few years and that trend is expected to grow as new technology continues to arrive.

When looking for a new mattress keep these points in mind:

1. Comfort – Make sure it is comfortable for you. Lie down on it as if you were going to sleep and see how it feels. You can’t judge how comfortable a mattress is by sitting on it or lying across it.

2. Support – Make sure it supports your spine and joints. It will greatly reduce aches and pains in the morning.

3. Durability – Ask if the mattress is made of quality products so it will last a long time.

4. Space – Purchase a mattress that is big enough for you and your partner if you have one. A king or queen mattress is typically recommended for couples.

It is always recommended to purchase a box spring each time you purchase a new mattress. Box springs can wear out as well as mattresses and if a new mattress is put on an old box spring it can also affect the life of the mattress. Low profile box springs are also available for people who choose to purchase a thick mattress. Mattress protectors are also very important. It will help protect your mattress and keep it clean. Many mattress warranties are voided by any kind of stain on the mattress itself.

In conclusion, doing your homework can make mattress shopping easier and a lot less stressful. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the salesperson. They are there to assist you in choosing the bed that is right for you. Happy shopping!
